Many of the voters for these awards and the Oscars overlap, and so the nominees and winners at the SAG Awards often indicate who will be successful again in a few weeks time. Taking home the SAG statuettes were clear shoe-ins Julianne Moore (Best Actress); Patricia Arquette (Best Supporting Actress) and J. K. Simmons (Best Supporting Actress). The welcome mini-surprise of the evening went to Eddie Redmayne's win - he's been neck-and-neck with Michael Keaton all season, and often it's been too close to call, so this win really does bolster his chances for the Best Actor Oscar. In terms of television, the ensemble cast of Downton Abbey reigned supreme and Orange is the New Black seems to now be firmly (and bizarrely) in the comedy category. A full list of winners can be found on the SAG website here.
It has to be said, the SAG Awards red carpet has to be one of the best in recent years. Most men shunned the standard, boring black tuxedo and instead opted for a (sort of) rainbow of colours and textures; while the women shone in a variety of gowns that all have very little in common! As ever my selection of the best fashion hits is below...
I've spent the morning trawling through Best Dressed galleries online and selected my favourite looks below. If you're after a more comprehensive assessment of the red carpet, then you can't go wrong with these: Vogue UK / Red Carpet Fashion Awards / Buzzfeed / InStyle / E! Online.
BEST DRESSED: EMMA STONE
Christian Dior Couture gown // Christian Louboutin heels // Repossi jewellery
Due to a never-ending press circuit for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Birdman last year, Emma Stone cemented her place as one of the Best Dressed women of 2014, and given this track record expectations for her red carpet outings this awards season were pretty high indeed. I've been pretty underwhelmed by Stone recently, but this stunning tuxedo dress from Christian Dior put an end to all that. The sheer panelling and long, dramatic train look exceptionally cool, and make for a very sexy silhouette when combined with the conservative structure of the tuxedo blazer. It's simple, striking, elegant and beyond exquisite.

Not only was Stone's fashion on point, but her hair and makeup was the best beauty look of the evening for me too. I absolutely adore her neat ponytail, mis-matched ear cuffs and bold orange-red lip. So, so beautiful!

SERIOUS BEST DRESSED CONTENDER: LUPITA NYONG'O
Elie Saab gown // Fred Leighton jewellery
The red carpet was unfolding pretty much as to be expected last night. If anything, it was even better than the Golden Globes a few weeks ago, and as the likes of Julianne Moore, Joanne Froggatt and Felicity Jones started to make their way along the lines of photographers the top Best Dressed spots seemed pretty much decided. Then all of a sudden, Lupita Nyong'o appeared and proved that she still possesses the ability to make even the most beautiful and immaculately dressed women in the industry look decidedly poor in comparison. She may be relegated to mere presenting duties this awards season, but Nyong'o is clearly still a red carpet winner. The combination of this bold Elie Saab gown, braided up-do and eye-popping makeup makes her an absolute vision. I'll admit: I was wrong to assume she'd lost her Best Dressed crown for good...
