SAG Awards 2015 Best Dressed

At under a month away the Oscars are fast approaching, and last night's Screen Actors Guild Awards provided Hollywood yet another opportunity to celebrate the best acting talent of 2014, both in the worlds of film and television.

Many of the voters for these awards and the Oscars overlap, and so the nominees and winners at the SAG Awards often indicate who will be successful again in a few weeks time. Taking home the SAG statuettes were clear shoe-ins Julianne Moore (Best Actress); Patricia Arquette (Best Supporting Actress) and J. K. Simmons (Best Supporting Actress). The welcome mini-surprise of the evening went to Eddie Redmayne's win - he's been neck-and-neck with Michael Keaton all season, and often it's been too close to call, so this win really does bolster his chances for the Best Actor Oscar. In terms of television, the ensemble cast of Downton Abbey reigned supreme and Orange is the New Black seems to now be firmly (and bizarrely) in the comedy category. It has to be said, the SAG Awards red carpet has to be one of the best in recent years. Most men shunned the standard, boring black tuxedo and instead opted for a (sort of) rainbow of colours and textures; while the women shone in a variety of gowns that all have very little in common! Golden Globe Awards 2015 Best Dressed

Awards season officially started last night with the 72nd Golden Globe Awards held at The Beverley Hilton Hotel in California.

Although they herald the beginning of the season, the Golden Globes (the winners of which are selected by the freelance journalists of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association) are not seen as a cast-iron indication of which films or actors will be celebrating further success with the BAFTAs and Oscars in a few weeks time. Ultimately they're a lovely accolade to win - or be nominated for - but it's best not to make overly confident predictions at this stage based on the outcomes.

Once again it was a successful evening, hosted for the third and final time by the brilliant duo of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. A full list of the winners can be found here, but in short it was a brilliant night for Boyhood (taking home Best Picture/Director/Supporting Actress), Birdman (Best Actor, Comedy/Screenplay) and Eddie Redmayne (Best Actor, Drama). In TV Gina Rodriguez took on comedy heavyweights and won (Best Actress in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy), Kevin Spacey made the most of a lack of Bryan Cranston and finally won a Golden Globe (Best Actor in a TV Series, Drama) and Joanne Froggatt made everyone cry with her acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Anna Bates in Downton Abbey.

Primetime Emmy Awards 2014 Best Dressed

I'm concerned I'm starting to say this every year, but there's no getting away from the fact that it really does feel like we're currently in the throes of a golden age for television.

From Breaking Bad to The Good Wife, Veep to Orphan Black, Sherlock to Parks and Recreation, Downton Abbey to Game of Thrones, House of Cards to Modern Family and everything in between, there really is excellent television for every taste imaginable these days. I've always been a devout film fan and never really had much interest in the small screen, but thanks to a Netflix subscription and recently discovering the box sets available on Sky I'm starting to seriously get into television. I devoured Breaking Bad like a meth addict last summer; made my way through two series of Orange is the New Black in a fortnight after my exams finished; desperately caught up on Scandal before the start of the new series on Sky Living a few weeks ago; rewatched all of Downton Abbey after Christmas as "dissertation research"; and fell head over heels for the fictional town of Pawnee in Parks and Recreation. I'm officially addicted.

Move over cinema, my lounge is now the place to be. What a time to be alive!

SAG Awards 2014 Best Dressed

The awards season marathon continues, and last night saw the 20th annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards at Los Angeles' Shrine Exposition Centre. The SAG awards are the only televised awards ceremony to exclusively celebrate the best of film and television acting, with 13 awards for individual performances and ensemble casts. American Hustle, 12 Years a Slave and Dallas Buyers Club fully cemented themselves as the front runners in the awards race (as if it wasn't already apparent…); and in television Breaking Bad has ended on a total high, continuing to sweep up awards following the explosive series finale last year.

Our cinemas and television screens are currently fit to bursting with more incredible films and exceptionally gripping and enthralling programmes than normal, so it must be that time of the year: awards season is finally upon us! The a-list are going to be out in full force over the next few weeks and they kicked off the season in spectacular style at last night's Golden Globe awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The Day of the Doctor

Doctor Who is as British as a perfectly made brew and as iconic as the Queen.

Over the last 50 years it's woven itself into the tapestry of our culture and helps to define what it means to be British. Everyone's heard of the Doctor, harbours a (not so) secret desire to travel in the Tardis at least once, and knows of the terror of the Daleks. Having an in-depth knowledge of the zygones, the origin of "Geronimo!" and just why that fez is so significant doesn't matter. Yes, of course it helps, but it's not a total necessity. That's the beauty of Doctor Who, it's accessible to all: young and old, new fans and diehard Whovians.

Television really is having a moment.

I normally merely have a passing flirtation with television shows and can take them or leave them, only choosing to mildly obsess over Downton Abbey or Grey's Anatomy or Sherlock, and occasionally indulging in the odd mini-series. I don't watch many shows - helped by my lack of a TV - and have long since accepted that I'm in a long term relationship with films. Recently, however, thanks to an obsession with Breaking Bad akin to the effects of meth onscreen I've become more and more aware of, and interested in, the television world. It may just be because I'm suddenly more attuned to it, but it seems to me that television is better than it's ever been. The calibre of acting, editing and directing has sky-rocketed, and I'm continually having to re-revaluate my preference for film over television in the face of overwhelmingly stunning shows.

The Graham Norton Show

It's like the saying goes: you wait for one bus and then they all come at once. Having had two months doing nothing but bury myself in books, as soon as my exams finished I've been exhausting myself scurrying all over London going to various different events.

Yesterday really was a night to remember as my friend and I spent the evening watching the series finale of The Graham Norton Show be taped. Watching a television show be taped is something I've always been dying to experience and so a couple of weeks ago I looked into applying for tickets to be part of the audience of a couple of different shows. I love watching The GNS every Friday and thought it was worth filling in the application form on the off-chance that I was successful. Luckily I was, and even though I got tickets to my lowest preference evening I had no intention of turning them down, and set about texting my friends to see who'd like to come too.

Arqiva BAFTA TV Awards 2013 Best Dressed

Tonight marks a celebration of all things television with the annual BAFTA TV Awards. The categories are extremely strong this year, and I'm excited to see a full list of the winners in about an hour... I have my fingers crossed particularly for Olivia Colman (Supporting Actress for Accused / Female Performance in a Comedy Programme for Twenty Twelve), Graham Norton (Entertainment Performance / Entertainment Programme) and all nominees related to The Hollow Crown and Parade's End. There's been a lot of fantastic British television this year, but they have to be my absolute favourites. My fingers and toes are crossed!

The red carpet was predictably soggy and umbrellas were out in force as London showed that the last few weeks of glorious sunshine were a total fluke and it's back to business as usual. That being said, a spot of rain didn't affect the fashion, and there were plenty of stand out looks this evening unhindered by the weather. Suspense was building all afternoon thanks to the #BAFTAStyle hashtag on Twitter, so it's lovely to finally see the outfits in full now instead of teases on Instagram!

Tuesday Night TV

It seems like the entire country is suffering from post-Olympic blues: what to do now there is no longer a constant barrage of sport on our televisions all day and night displaying the outstanding talents of Team GB’s greatest Olympians? What did we do with our lives in the time before London 2012? Well thank goodness for the BBC (as always). They’ve commissioned a fabulous up-coming TV schedule with enough brand new British drama, baking shows and comedy to keep everyone happy in this odd phase of dead time without Jessica Ennis’s abs, Mo Farah’s mobot, and Sir Chris Hoy cycling round and round in circles collecting gold medals like nobody’s business.

The BBC has inexplicably solved the problem of this vacuum even without the theme to Chariots of Fire playing on a constant loop.
