As it's the most glamorous of festivals it seemed only fitting to pour over images from the twelve days of photo-calls, events and premieres and narrow down my favourite looks to collate a Best Dressed list.
For the first time in its history the festival jury was chaired by two people - Joel and Ethan Coen, who were joined by Rossy de Palma, Sophie Marceau, Sienna Miller, Rokia Traoré, Guillermo del Toro, Xavier Dolan, and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Many critics felt the competition slate this year was good but not great, but there were still highlights to be celebrated. Adored by virtually everyone that saw it, Carol has been drowning in 5* reviews and gushing praise for the two female leads Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, the latter taking home the Best Actress prize at the end of the festival. From what I can tell this lesbian love story is an achingly beautiful and expertly layered adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's 1952 novel, The Price of Salt, and one that absolutely should not be missed when it comes to cinemas later in the year. László Nemes' directorial debut Son of Saul, a harrowing Holocaust drama tracking a Hungarian member of Auschwitz-Birkenau’s Sonderkommando is apparently gripping, poignant and by eschewing the standard sentimental clichés it is nothing short of remarkable: again, one to watch out for. Then there's Palm D'Or winner Dheepan, the story of a former Tamil Tiger starting fresh in Paris with a makeshift family; and winner of Best Director (The Assassin), Best Screenplay (Chronic), and the Jury Prize (The Lobster).

Tense drug-trade thriller Sicario led by Emily Blunt went down well too; and one I've been eagerly anticipating for what feels like years, Shakespeare's Scottish play, Macbeth, with Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard in the leads seemed to live up to expectations. Apparently the battles and supporting cast are incredible, and the makeup choices inspired.
That's not to forget those out of competition: the formidable, exhausting and utterly wonderful Mad Max: Fury Road roared onto the Croisette; and the new offering from Pixar, Inside Out, looks to be (obviously) an enormous hit with children and adults alike.

The festival wasn't without its controversies: Gus Van Sant's The Sea of Trees was a total disaster and was met with boos and all-time low reviews. Plus, when women were turned away from the red carpet for wearing flats questions surrounding the dress code and its enforcement dominated the headlines.
On that note, let's turn to the fashion. As ever it was pretty spectacular, with many actresses in particular consistently hitting all the right notes with numerous appearances at photo-calls, industry events and red carpets.
BEST DRESSED WOMAN: CATE BLANCHETT
Carol premiere // May 17th 2015
Giles A/W15 collection gown
Does Cate Blanchett ever get it wrong? No. Never. The Australian actress totally outshone everyone else at the festival in this absolutely stunning Giles A/W15 gown. The bold and hypnotic print is worlds away from the normal Cannes red carpet attire but it's so mesmerising - and elegantly worn by Blanchett - that it stands out for all the right reasons. On any other actress I think it would have been overwhelming, but Blanchett wears the show-stopping structure and print perfectly.
By keeping her hair, makeup and jewellery simple Blanchett allows the dress to be the centre of attention, and given the praise she received for her performance in Carol - universally adored by Cannes critics and thus hinting that awards season success is just around the corner for her, again - it's fitting that all eyes were on Blanchett at the premiere.

Just look at the detailing on the back! This was a gown that needed a dramatic staircase entrance, so congratulations to whoever had the marvellous idea to bring together this Giles creation, Cate Blanchett and Cannes. Double thumbs up from me!

BEST DRESSED MAN: COLLIN FARRELL
The Lobster photo-call // May 15th 2015
Dolce & Gabbana
Nothing beats a three-piece suit, and Collin Farrell really pulled it out of the bag with this Dolce & Gabbana number. The light grey shade and lack of a tie keep it casual enough for the daytime photo-call while simultaneously smart enough to adhere to the glamour expected at Cannes. Farrell looks effortlessly stylish: gentlemen, take note.

So they're my favourites! There were hundreds of other notable looks from the festival, but I obviously had to narrow them down for my top looks above. If you fancy taking a look at a more comprehensive list, then Vogue is a pretty good place to start here.
As much as I adore the Elie Saab/Zuhair Murad intricately detailed sequinned gowns that have swept the red carpets in droves this year, they're becoming a little repetitive and - dare I say it - boring. They're always going to be my favourite red carpet look no matter what the occasion so there are a couple featured above, but even for me I felt they dominated Cannes a little too much this year. I still think they're the epitome of beautiful, romantic and elegant designs but it really was overkill with them! As such for me Cannes was seriously lacking in variety this year.
Also, I still cannot abide by this nude dress with strategically placed sequins trend that went nuts at the Met Ball. I can't be the only one to think it's unbearably tacky, can I?!
Who was your Best Dressed? Were you as stunned by Cate Blanchett's Giles showstopper as I was, or do you prefer Marion Cotillard's Dior sequinned mini-dress from the Macbeth premiere? Do let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
