The Internet is a black hole of procrastination, so I thought I’d compile a post with a small selection of the blogs/websites that seem to eat up all of my time and effectively abduct me from the real world!
The main culprit of my time wasting is undoubtedly Twitter which, admittedly, I should be ashamed of but I just can’t help it! One of the best accounts has to be @Queen_UK who pretends to tweet as the Queen, commenting on all major events – be it the Jubilee, Olympics, or just the antics of her government – with a sardonic, dry humour that has me in stiches. Favourite tweets so far: “Nick Clegg on the phone. Bit upset about having to drop his plans to replace the House of Lords with a children’s zoo, or whatever it was.”; “The Empire Strikes Back. Come on TeamGB. Do it for your Queen. #olympicceremony”; and “Call from French President. He’s Nervous about Wiggins winning Tour de France. They never liked the British riding triumphantly into Paris.” Pure genius.
I’m an unashamed film nerd, and am always on IMDb. I just can’t help it. If I’m watching a film at home I’ll be on the IMDb app on my phone throughout the entire movie, reading up on all the trivia, goofs and major quotes. I’ll look at all the filming locations and all the awards it’s won, as well as going through the entire cast and crew and seeing what else they’ve been in or worked on. And if I saw the film at the cinema I can’t wait to get home, fire up my laptop and start finding out everything I can get my hands on about the film. This inevitably leads me to YouTube and newspaper sites, reading up on reviews and watching trailers. Time wasting, yes, but oh so addictive!
You’ve met Rosie The Londoner before (via her Banana Nutella Muffins) but she’s so good I had to mention her again! Check out her Tumblr as well: it’s a treasure trove of beautiful photographs, cake and inspirational quotes.
The Boy Who Bakes – providing food porn at its finest! Edd Kimber won The Great British Bake Off (one of my FAVOURITE TV shows) in 2010, and since then he’s written his first book (which – to my shame – I haven’t got round to baking anything from it yet, I’ve just read it over and over again, admiring all of the stunning pictures). I’m also very excited for his next book, Say It With Cake that comes out September 13th 2012. He’s famous for his crazy macaron skills, and he runs monthly classes in Central London where you can learn to make them under his watchful eyes. I’d love to book onto one of his classes, so that’s definitely one for the Christmas List…
PostSecret – I came across this gem a few years ago and still check it religiously every Sunday when Frank, the man behind the website, posts a selection of secrets he’s been sent from all over the world. The general concept is that you write down a secret on the back of a postcard, and send it off to him. Hundreds end up on the website; and others in his books. It’s incredibly popular in America, with Frank touring American universities giving lectures to students. This winter, he’s FINALLY coming to the UK: I’ve already booked my ticket to the London talk, and although that’s sold out you can still buy tickets here for events across the UK.
Perez Hilton – I can’t really explain myself: I’m a sucker for celebrity gossip and Perez is one of the best sites around! I’m currently watching the RPattz/KStew saga unfold, glued to my laptop for each new development. I think that’s a sure sign I need to get a life!
TheLawyer101 – the lovely Nazifa has just started her blog, and I think everyone should show her some love and check it out! Her first post was a quick welcome, letting people know who she is and giving the world a teaser of what she has to offer. I’m really excited to see her posts of recipes – I can bake but cooking is a skill that massively eludes me – and her reviews of products: I do love a good review! I’ve also spied (mid blog-stalk) that she’s posted a ‘quote of the day’, and as someone that collects quotes that a madwoman (I find them written everywhere, from in the Notes of my iPhone to in random notebooks all over the house) I’m looking forward to more of them! Have a read and drop her a comment!
Suri’s Burn Book – OMG this is hilarious. By far one of the best Tumblrs I’ve come across. I spent an entire afternoon going through all of the posts and literally lol-ing. The author of the blog acts as a ‘ghost writer’ for daughter of the recently divorced TomKat, Suri Cruise, providing sarcastic comments on fellow celebrity children and their parents. Trust me, this is definitely one to bookmark!
So these are a few of my favourite sites but I love finding new ones: any recommendations of a film/food/gossip nature? Or just something I MUST check out? Let me know and I’ll definitely have a look!
