Coming Soon: February 2015

It's that time again! Here's the latest Coming Soon post: a look at the best new releases hitting cinemas in February.

As awards season draws to a close, February sees the start of more comedies, more sci-fi and more action, all of which are clear non-awards contenders. There are still a couple - Cake for example - that have only just filtered across the Atlantic and into U.K. cinemas, but on the whole films are now starting to become more light-hearted and less involved. As much as I love a good Oscar nominee, sometimes it's nice to just go to the cinema to be purely entertained, rather than to spend two hours concentrating on the intricate cinematography, admiring the beautiful scores and revelling in truly astonishing acting. Not every film has to be two hours of award-winning brilliance for it to be worth your time.

Hopefully there's something for everyone in this post, from the controversial The Interview; to the latest sci-fi epic from the Wachowskis, Jupiter Ascending; to the sequel featuring an enormous list of acting royalty, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel; to the critically acclaimed and criminally snubbed Selma.

All films below are released in cinemas in February in the U.K.: some may have already opened abroad so if you're outside the U.K. then do check your local cinemas for film times and release dates.

THE INTERVIEW

"Dave Skylark and producer Aaron Rapoport run the celebrity tabloid show "Skylark Tonight." When they land an interview with a surprise fan, North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, they are recruited by the CIA to turn their trip to Pyongyang into an assassination mission."

JUPITER ASCENDING
Friday 6th February 2015

"In a bright and colorful future, a young destitute caretaker gets targeted by a ruthless son of a powerful family that live on a planet in need of a new heir, so she travels with a genetically engineered warrior to the planet in order to stop his tyrant reign."

SELMA
Friday 6th February 2015

"A chronicle of Martin Luther King's campaign to secure equal voting rights via an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965."

[I saw Selma a few weeks ago as part of Odeon's Screen Unseen series, and it was absolutely phenomenal. I gave it 5* here, but if I could have given it 500 I would - I can't overstate how utterly incredible this film is. It's brutal, raw and boldly uncomfortable at points, and director Ava DuVernay doesn't shy away from depicting deep-rooted racism and the civil rights struggle as it really was. If any film on this list needs to be seen it's Selma, so put it at the top of your must-see list for February.]

SHAUN THE SHEEP MOVIE
Friday 6th February 2015

"When Shaun decides to take the day off and have some fun, he gets a little more action than he bargained for. A mix up with the Farmer, a caravan and a very steep hill lead them all to the Big City and it's up to Shaun and the flock to return everyone safely to the green grass of home."

LOVE IS STRANGE
Friday 13th February 2015

THE WEDDING RINGER
Friday 20th February 2015

"Two weeks shy of his wedding, a socially awkward guy enters into a charade by hiring the owner of a company that provides best men for grooms in need."

THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL
Thursday 26th February 2015

THE BOY NEXT DOOR
Friday 27th February 2015

"A newly divorced woman falls for a younger man who has recently moved in across the street from her, but their torrid affair soon takes a dangerous turn."

Personally, I've been waiting to see Jupiter Ascending for ages; I'm enormously intrigued by The Turning; and given the fantastic reviews I can't wait to see Love is Strange. I also feel like Cake deserves a watch in order to see Jennifer Anniston's critically acclaimed performance. Are you looking forward to any of the films highlighted above?
